This 1983 Lotus Esprit is #3 of 50 Investor’s Special Edition examples produced for the model year, all of which were sold to investors in the Lotus Performance Cars distribution company upon the automaker’s return to the US market in 1983. It is powered by a turbocharged 2.2-liter inline-four paired with a five-speed manual transaxle and finished in Jupiter Red over black leather upholstery. Equipment includes 15″ BBS alloy wheels, power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes, twin Dell’Orto carburetors, air conditioning, electric windows, and a Naxa CD stereo.
The Series III Esprit was the final variation of the Giugiaro-penned design, and the Turbo model featured an aerodynamic body kit used on the earlier Essex Turbo Esprit. This example is finished in Jupiter Red (A3o) and features pop-up headlights, black bumpers, a tinted sunroof panel, an integrated rear spoiler, a mono wiper, side air inlets, dual fuel fillers, rear window louvers, “Special Edition 03” side graphics, and a single exhaust outlet that exits through the rear valance.
The two-spoke steering wheel wears a personalized plaque and frames Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 170-mph speedometer, a tachometer, a boost-pressure gauge, and supplementary readouts for voltage, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit mechanical odometer indicates 35k miles, approximately 2k of which were added during current ownership.
